Per the Horizon Report 2021, one key technology is Student Data Privacy and Governance. Student data gets collected across different stages of admission and enrollment processes and throughout their entire educational journey at any educational institution through graduation(Kelly et al., 2021). In order to achieve effective protection and storing of student data, the educational institutions (universities and colleges) must have policies that enforce the protection of student data such as multifactor authentication, strong password adoption, as well as vendor compliances with regulatory acts such as HIPPA, FERPA, etc. This should all go alongside a sensitization campaign on information security awareness. Also, having a certain degree of transparency with students on their data collection, storage, and protection; getting informed consent; permitting review and update of student data by students (Kelly et al., 2021).
The Uber Trend – Remote Work is a representation of the novel approach in working remotely from anywhere and anytime. This trend has skyrocketed as impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic especially with corporations empowering their employees with capabilities to work remotely while remaining productive. This persisting trend of remote working has also transformed the approaches within the higher education space (Kelly et al., 2021). This impact of this remote model of learning in higher educational institutions and working in different industries have presented efficient results which prior were considered impossible. These approaches are now changing and restructuring information security in the higher education space. Also, specifically from a higher education perspective, new professional roles and responsibilities will arise. It is important to also mention that the Remote Employee Experience Index uncovers that just twelve percent of skilled office workers intend to return exclusively to working in the office. This could be referred to as some sort of a new normal or novel ordinary approach to working which might not completely be reverted even post COVID-19 (Kelly et al., 2021).
A major force that impacts this technology trend is the social force demonstrated primarily by data privacy concerns which is the struggle with most organizations resisting the accommodation of remote work. The fact that remote employees could create risks and thus require training to make safer decisions in the remote work environment to better protect company data. Society generally continues to focus on data privacy, especially with the violations of data privacy. Besides, the shortage of an information security workforce with skills in securing information in smaller institutions could serve as a limiting factor for the advancement of this trend (Preimesberger, 2021; New Media Consortium, n.d.). The second force impacting this technological trend is the economical force especially with the shift to remote learning. It is more economical since students can have their assignments completed in the comfort of their homes without necessarily driving to school. The flexible approach to remote learning cause students to save in both time, effort, transportation costs, etc. Thus, the economical force has advanced the adoption and success of remote learning in higher education (Kelly et al., 2021).
